2018 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28

In 2013, Chevrolet revived the Z/28 nameplate after a 46-year
absence. The model was based on the 5th-generation
Camaro. The 2018 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 is a track-ready variant
of the road-going Camaro
coupe. When Chevrolet introduced the 6th
generation Camaro recently, we thought a Z/28 would follow up
shortly later and we were right. A  Camaro which we
believe is the 3rd-generation Z/28 has been caught doing its
testing runs at the Nurburgring track.

Unfortunately, the first prototype crashed on the tracks but
the automaker seemingly unperturbed by the unfortunate even
released another prototype a week later to continue with the
testing.

Unlike the 2013 model, the automaker seeks to infuse the
original virtues of the Z/28 to make it as special as the
original model. Critics argue that the 2015 model lacks the
qualities of the original Z/28. Lack of these virtues is also
considered the reason the 2015 model has been slow in the
market, unlike the 2013 model which was very popular.

2018 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 Exterior

The prototype our spy photographers caught testing at the
Nurburgring testing track was under heavy camouflage. However,
despite the camouflage, we can see that the model has received
significant changes compared to the outgoing model. The model
looks hardcore with features like a shelf-like front splitter,
rocker panel extensions that are borrowed from the
Corvette Z06 and an adjustable rear wing.

The front also comes with aggressive canards and features a
vented hood similar to the ZL1. The front grille is also large
than the one on regular Camaros. The grille is similar to the
one on the ZL1. The grille is flanked by small intakes but
which are larger than those on the other Camaros.

On the sides, the model features pumped out fenders to fit
wider tires. The prototype appears to have 20-spoke, 19-inch
wheels in front and 20-inch wheels at the rear. The wheels are
wrapped in Pirelli P Zero Trofeo tires. Next to the wheels are
huge brake discs which look like 15-inch Brembo carbon-ceramic
discs.

2018 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 Interior

The interior of the 2018 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 is still a
mystery. Being a truck-oriented model, the Z/28 will most
likely feature a track-focused cabin just like its predecessor.
As such, expect the model to feature Recaro racing seats. To
save space, the vehicle won’t have the rear seats. To help
racers monitor their sessions, the model will likely come
standard with GM’s performance Data Recorder.

Other features will include a MyLink infotainment system, less
sound insulation, thinner glass and carbon-fiber accenting to
save weight. In addition, an air conditioning system will be
optional just as it was in the predecessor Z/28.

Engine Specs and performance

I am meant to believe that the automaker will make changes
under the hood. Currently, the Z/28 stands apart from the
Camaro lineup with a naturally aspirated 7.0 L, LS7 V-8 engine.
This engine produces 505 hp which is a lot less than the Camaro
ZL1. However, compared to the other Camaros, the outgoing Z/28
was the most expensive. For the new model, I believe the
automaker will hook it up with matching power to back it
position at the top of the Camaro trim.

Most likely, the Z/28 will be hooked up with the supercharged
6.2 L, V-8 that drives the upcoming Camaro ZL1. On the ZL1, the
engine produces 640 hp. We don’t know the level of its output
in the Z/28 but we are certain it will be over the outgoing
model’s 505 hp.

For transmission, there will be two options. The first option
is a 6-speed manual gearbox which will be offered as standard
while a 10-speed automatic system similar to the one on the ZL1
will be offered as an option.  The automatic transmission
system is specifically tuned for track racing and features
super fast shifts.

Price and release date

The Camaro Z/28 will be offered as a 2018 model as it has to
undergo many tests before it is released into the market. As
such, I don’t see it coming as a 2017 model car.

I believe the automaker could showcase it at the Detroit Auto
show before availing it to dealerships later next year. As for
the price, I believe the new Z/28 will be slightly expensive
than the 2015 model which starts at $72,305, a price of around
$75,000 is likely.

Competition

Major rivals of the new Z/28 will be the likes of the
Ford Mustang GT350R, Porsche
911 GT3 ,
Mercedes-AMG C63 coupe and BMW
M4.
